Hiyo! I'm new, and have a silly question. Smile

When/If you cross-stitch in public, what's the most common question you get? Smile

I tend to get things like, "I could never do that!" or "That looks so hard!!!"

I usually get "That must take a lot of patience."

(Personally, I think it takes more patience to just sit & watch TV.)

If it is in front of somebody who knows me, it's usually "Wow, I would've never pictured you doing something like that". Apparently, if I showed up in fatigues and brandishing a bazooka, that would fit their expectations.

If it's a stranger, and it is usually kids (I spend my life on the soccer fields of Georgia), they just kind of stare at it until I say something to them, and then they ask "What are you doing? How do you know where it goes?" and more often than not, "Why?" Of course, I do live in the craft void of America, so it's taken me years to finally run into one person at a game who knew what I was doing, and she brought her granddaughter over to see it.

Does it bug anybody else when people say you are doing needlepoint? Just like when people say I was in the Army - I was in the Air Force, folks - entirely different thing!!!

Kinda... I always explain the difference to them, though.

Yeah, I usually just say I do embroidery without specifying which type and that seems to satisfy most people. Mind you, I did start off because of a passion for tapestry. This has died down now, although tapestry designs are still my favourite; now I just cross stitch them!

I get that a lot too... maybe not the bazooka part... I guess I put off a "tomboy" vibe or something? I get the same reaction when I bake something for someone...

I never begrudge those less educated in "Needle Arts". I usually just smile and tell them it's cross stitch, and if they are interested in the difference I explain it to them. I find that people generally dont WANT to say the wrong thing - they just havent had any experience with it.

I once had a kid come and ask me what I was doing. So I imitaed my grandmother and showed her how and why I was doing it. Smile She totally wanted to help -- it was so cute!!

Yeah, I get the patience commentes too. I showed my current project to my therapist, and she was kind enough to ask what it was technically called -- needlepoint or what? Smile So I informed her that it was cross-stitch, and what the difference was.

Squee~!
