Tami

Yay!!! Tami's our new best friend from the USA!! That's so kind of you, Tami. I think it may definitely be worth it for when I buy all the threads for my SQ.

When our Wal Marts had DMC clearanced out a few months ago, I grabbed great loads of it and shipped two large envelopes to Oz and a couple to the UK Smile Thanks to that, and a snafu done by Hancock's web advertising a couple of years ago where they accidently sent out an e-mail advertising 20/$1, I have 40 projects completely kitted in DMC. Of course, it couldn't have happened when I was kitting up my SQ, so some of those were 25 cents a skein, others 30, depending on which store had what.

What I want to know is - with the advent and wide availability of all these other flosses these days, is DMC feeling the heat at all?? Surely it's having some impact on their sales? And if it were me, and my sales were being affected by more and more competition (and less stores carrying them since Wal Mart got rid of them), I would lower my priices a bit, in an attempt to make it up in quantity. I have to say that, having paid 10 cents a skein when I started this obsession many years ago, and even now being able to get them for 25-30 cents each pretty easily, I do not understand how needlework shops can even carry stock for 50-70 cents each! There must be enough people in the world who tell their stores to just throw in the necessary flosses with the chart. Shocked I'd like to be at a point in my life, someday, where I could afford to pay double what it costs down the street, without batting an eye; okay, it's only a skein of thread, but it's the principle of the thing, you know? Oh, and with a SQ, it's not a few skeins, it's HUNDREDS!! That adds up :)And with the price of DMC in Europe and Oz, it's a wonder the craft is still thriving in those places. Though you guys have Anchor, too, and I had never seen any of those before we had this conversation in one of my groups, and my Oz pals bombarded me with lovely Anchor variegateds Very Happy

I had a point here, but I have since lost it... thank the gods it is Friday, as I smell something burning, and I think it's me - I'm fried! Confused So, yeah, if you "outworlders" need an importer, I could help you out, too Cool

Karen I was thinking the same thing...I have found a place that is selling the Anchor for .35 and can get the entire collections for about...139.00 (i think) I found that site a while ago and since then have lost as I forget to bookmark it....but I know where the other is....and if our Ozzie friends would like to exchange Anchor for DMC....I am all for it......I am on disability so only get paid once a month and that being at the end of the month so my exchanging would have to be around then.....you all let me know . I decided that I want to get the full collection of Anchor as I have heard that it may be a better Quality then DMC? ANY feedback on that...?...

Ok I have to go now because I promised some friends that I would get the instructions for the stand out some time today....but DH is home today...and not sure if that's going to happen.....LOL....at least not til he goes to bed...... Rolling Eyes

Stitching Tami

P.S. When the floss is not on sale I pay... .28/sk at Hobby Lobby....

I have had various reports that DMC and Anchor are pretty darn near the same, but that Anchor Black is a weensy bit thicker tham DMC 310, so has a bit better coverage. The Anchor threads I received from my pals are very nice, it feels the same as DMC, but I think the sheen might be a bit higher - it's hard to tell because they are variegated, and I would have to lay them next to a DMC equivalent to be sure. But I have a lot of the newer DMC Variations (LOVE these!), and I just don't think they are quite as shiny as the Anchor. Could all be my imagination, too - you know how gifties are sometimes shinier than the same thing non-gifted? Wink

And our Hobby Lobbies have them down to .25 each, since last fall, I think. Michael's, I think, is up to .33, but their sales are a little more frequent than others. There's a store chain called AC Moore that we don't have down here that seems to have pretty frequent 5/$1 and even the occasional 10/$1 sales; I e-mailed them and asked them if they'd like to build a store here Smile Atlanta's a huge market they are missing, after all....

Yeah, it sounds like you guys have heaps better deals on supplies than we get Down Under (I'm trying to convince suppliers that they should give discounts on bulk purchases... but they're not biting). I can't think why. I suppose American culture has a longer history of "the gentle arts", but we're not too far behind down here- a lot of country housewives turning out some pretty impressive stuff. I guess American craft and handiwork is just better established and with a longer history, all of which spells cheaper stuff! Thanks, Rife for the helpy help-out offer too, you guys rule. I should send you a postal address for those silk samples we were talking about ages ago.... do you have an email?

Thanks for the Ebay link, Tami. I can't quite figure out how this stand would work though, what grips the scroll frame?

As for DMC vs Anchor, I have to say I prefer the former. I've had Anchor kits before and the floss, although thicker, shreds much more easily and pulls tight to be thinner and thinner until by the end of the length you feel like you're sewing with normal cotton thread! The colours, I feel, are also a little duller. But then again, maybe it's just me. I'm sure somebody else could say all the same things about DMC.

Happy stitching! Stitching

Hi Tami,

Well the big day has come- we're going to my parents-in-law's place for the long weekend and my father-in-law has a big shed full of wood and woodworking materials and is very enthusiastic about doing anything with it! So as he was leaving for work this morning, hubby whispered in my ear, "why don't you print out all that information that girl gave you on how to make that stand..." I'm so excited! I went back to the links for your photos but some of them are no longer there (the photos I mean, not the links) and I've also printed out your list of materials. But do you have some step-by-step instructions for how to make this stand? I would really appreciate it!
Did you also make the scroll frame you have on the stand? It looks awesome!

Okay, I'll let you know how it all goes. Razz
