Working on 25 count     Reply with quote

I am wanting to cross something on 25 ct over 1. I am afraid that using 2 strands would be too crowded. Even on 18 ct sometimes it is hard to get all the stitches in.

If I use only 1 strand, it will get knotted VERY easily. What would help me not to get so many knots on 1 strand. These are not blended stitches.

If you have worked on 25 ct before, please give me some advise. Laraine

One the projects that I'm working on it on 25 count. I'm using DMC and don't have too much trouble with knotting if I use a thread length of not more than the lengh of my arm (that's how I measure it). However, I can tell you that when I use thread that knots up easily like marlitt, some silks, then I use a thread lenths of not more than 12 in (or 30 cm). Hope this helps. Good luck!

There's a product called Thread Heaven that works quite well in keeping down the knots.

In addition to using shorter lengths of floss, be sure to untwist it frequently. You can just let the floss dangle to untwist. It also helps to pull the floss through the fabric slowly. And using a larger size needle may help.

Are you using 2 stands or one. The pix I am going to do is two cats with loud colors. I am making it for my daughter. It does not have blended threads. I wish I could use 18 instead of 25 but it would be REALLY TOO BIG! laraine Carlsbad, New Mexico.

I do a LOT of over-1, though usually on 28ct or higher. I always use 1 strand (on 36-40ct, you don't really have a choice Smile ). If you are having knotting problems, like already suggested, let your thread untwist frequently - just let your needle drop and hang from the backside for a minute.

Also, if the humidity is low, you may have more tendency to knot - either Thread Heaven or a just barely damp paper towel to run your threads through before loading your needle (if using DMC or some other colorfast brand).

If all else fails, do a test stitch with 1 strand vs. 2 somewhere along the edge of your fabric, see 1) if it solves your problem, and 2) if you physically can get 2 strands through AND like the coverage. I assume the piece you want to do over-1 has no blends?

Just to add another thought, on 25 ct, I only use one thread as I do cross stitch, but I guess if you did tent you might want to use 2 strands for better coverage.

Let us know if things are going a bit smoother

Tent stitch is a half-stitch, just the /// of the normal X. IF you did the half or tent stitch on 25ct, the 2 strands would probably give you great coverage... Again, do a test stitch, see if you like the look...
