Hi Pam, Pamn here. (I love that!) Do not spot wash; you're asking for rings of demarcation if you do. Just gently wash the entire thing all at once using VERY diluted Dawn dish washing detergent (use the clear, no scented kind preferably). Wash the piece by sloshing it around in shallow, tepid water FACE DOWN. This is so that if there is any dye bleeding it will not settle on the face of the piece. Rinse extremely well, then rinse again. "Wring the piece out" by rolling it in a light colored towel, then squeezing the towel. Very gently press it dry face down on a clean towel using a warm iron. Be prepared, this part takes awhile. When you're finished, let the piece "rest" for about an hour so any moisture still lurking about can evaporate. Then you can stitch again. Just remember to do everything gently, gently and you should be good to go. Live long and prosper, Pamn.
