Cross Stitch Patterns by Scarlet Quince | Speckling???
Doing Face of Woman on ivory 22 ct Hardanger and there is a lot of black and no matter how hard I try I keep getting this speckling look from the tiny specks of material showing through. .
It is agrivating because I keep thinking it is going to look terrible when I am finished. I am somewhere over 3300 stitches and I am thinking of getting a 22 ct adia instead and starting over (which I would have gotten in the first place if I had found it at the time).
I have never worked on anything with so much black, is it normal to get some speckling in black stitches? I have even thought of using a finepoint perm marker to dot the dots
Hate to continue working on it if it is better to start over. Would I still get them if I use the Aida?
My first suggestion would be to railroad your stitches or use a laying tool, so that you know the two strands are laying side by side; if they are side by side and not twisted, I can't imagine you'd have much if any fabric showing through at all - my Lady & Unicorn is on 22ct hardanger/aida, and there's NOTHING showing through on it in any of the colors - there's no room. As far as I know, 22ct hardanger and 22ct aida are the same thing - someone correct me if I'm wrong. I usually see it written 22ct hardanger/aida - but that may be specific to the Charles Craft stuff I get locally, as opposed to what an actual needlework shop can get? Pictures I've seen online, whether it's called one or the other or both as I'm used to seeing it, look exactly alike to me (though you can only get so much detail from a thumbnail photo, of course).
You can refer to the TIPS section here for railroading & Laying tools are discussed here in the forum in a couple of places, if I recall correctly... I think once you've got the threads laying neatly side by side, taking up as much width as possible, the speckling will go away.
Also, just a visual test - put the stitching down on a neutral background (NOT black or bright white - anything in between) and step back to what would be normal viewing distance for the finished piece hanging on your wall, and see if you still see it; I think we forget sometimes that we work a piece 10x closer than we will actually ever view it when done, so some of what we perceive as imperfections while we are up close & personal with it, actually are just integral parts to cross stitching (as opposed to other forms of embroidery, such as crewel) and disappear when viewing from a regular distance....
Thanks Karen, i was railroading but it still seams like there is too many spots. I did look more from a distance and you are right they are not showing up but I can not figure out why it is doing it. You said your fabric is so tight to put the stitches in but mine don't seem to be that tight. I am just afraid they will show up even more when I stretch for framing. Also I may start using a tool but if it does look different then I will have to tear out the old. Since my peice of fabric is very long I may just cut this off. I don't know.

That is what I thought too but I started doing an area with many different colors and it is way different, tighter (like you said Karen), no noticable specles, tightening the way I always do.
I wonder if instead of doing a row (first half down the row, 2nd half when going back) it would be better to finish each individual stitch as I go which would be simular to when stitching the different blended stitches. Hmm...
I don't know if the black areas in question are actually stitched in black DMC 310? Over the years, I have seen/had discussions as to whether or not 310 is actually thinner than other colors, or it's purely an optical illusion; I know a LOT of stitchers swear that 310 is thinner than most other colors. Some have even suggested swapping out DMC 310 for the equivalent Anchor (which has never been an option for me to test, as I have never actually seen Anchor anywhere). I just know that some believe this, and may or may not be a contributing factor to what you're describing....

That is what it seemed like to me too, the 310 seemed thinner, but I though it must be my imagination. I did an area with different colors and had no problem with it.
That being said I flipped my material around (it is much longer then needed) and started stitching where I finish each stitch before going on to the next. This works better because if I see where it is doing it again I can 'fluff up' that stitch before going on. If i had know about the Anchor black being a better choice I would have went for it but as it is I will sloooowly progress the way I am going.
