I believe the forum login is working again. (Since we moved to the new host, logins didn't "take" the first time - you would seem to be logged in but if you looked on the left, the "Log in/out" link would still say "Log in". If you logged in again, it would work the second time.)
As some of you have noticed, we are also having problems with spammers. I am checking often and removing the spam posts but if it continues we will make registering and logging in (now that logins work again!) a requirement for posting.
Since forum registration is now required for posting, I want to clarify that this is different than becoming a Scarlet Quince member and subscribing to the newsletter. Unfortunately! Maybe we can integrate them in the future but for now, even if you are a Scarlet Quince member, that doesn't mean you are also registered for posting in the forums. You have to do that separately. Sorry to give you one more thing to remember ...
Meredith, this is terrible, we're getting spammed from all sides lately! Having to register and log in doesn't seem to be deterring them! Maybe we should introduce a monitoring system for new registrations? Just verify a newbie's first couple of posts and check that they're legitimate? Of course, that means more work for you...
It certainly is annoying. I don't know if there is a way I can "approve" posts from new members before they go in but I'll look into it. Currently I try to check the forums at least once a day, delete the spam as soon as I see it, and ban the user. But I'll see if there is something more that can be done.
Gone. Here's what's happening: I changed the registration last week so that you can't post until you have responded to an email that is sent to the email address you give when you register. That takes care of the spambots, and I also preemptively banned a lot of users I didn't think were real people.
That still allows actual people to spam though (editorial: how can it be worth anyone's time to manually register, confirm, and then post to a place where it's guaranteed no one wants to see what they have?). I had to go out of town over the weekend (arriving in Boise at midnight Friday and back here at midnight Monday) and now I have bronchitis, who's surprised? This has interfered with my doing much more than checking the forums often.
The forum software has some moderator tools (which will be greatly improved in a new version coming soon) which is what we really need - so I can just look at the posts before they go in. I still need to learn how that works though. For the time being, I have changed the registrations so that I have to approve them and I will be having some conversation with each new user before I do. I think this will be too much work for spammers (who probably don't speak English anyway). There could still be someone registered that I haven't banned who will still spam but I hope not. And meanwhile I'll try to figure out the moderation features.
