Ebay purchase     Reply with quote

Just wanted to quickly run this by you guys...

Do any of you regularly buy things off Ebay? Have you found it reliable?

I recently (just last week) bought a discontinued TW kit off ebay (I usually prefer the kits for these simple patterns because they are a lot cheaper than buying all the materials seperately). And haven't heard back from the seller about when they'll be sending it to me. Is that normal? Do the sellers normally contact you about what you have purchased and confirm or something? I'm a bit nervous about not hearing back from anyone. Also, their staus has now changed to "no longer a member"! Is this a bad sign? They seemed to have a lot of good reviews from other people, although mostly from sellers rather than buyers.

Just asking...

I buy things off ebay fairly frequently. Not all buyers email you back quickly. Some seem to only mail things out once a week, and email you when they send things out. Your best bet would be to email them (I'm assuming you already paid them), and say "I hadn't heard so just wanted to see when the item will be shipped so I can keep an eye out for it." Also check the item description -- sometimes sellers are going to be out of town and they put a note in the description saying so.

So to really answer your question -- yes sometimes sellers fail to email you about when something is sent. But most will quickly respond to an email.

Jen.

Thanks Jen. I have written them an email and am just waiting for a response now. I'm a bit concerned about their status saying that they're no longer a member though. I guess now I just have to wait. They charged me a lot for posdtage though and then said it would still take 6 or 7 weeks to get here!! To me that is not normal, I receive many things from the US in less time and for less money. I'm a little bit suspicious actually. But we'll see...

It's true, some sellers are very, very slow to respond - BUT - I think the fact that it says they are not a member anymore is a VERY bad sign. You haven't paid yet, have you? If you have paid, you should contact eBay right away because there is a limited time to complain about fraud. If you haven't paid, at least ask eBay what is going on. I'm not positive, but I'm not aware of any way to become "not a member" except for eBay to kick you off. Even if you do hear from this seller eventually, it may not be a good idea to enter into a transaction wih them.

Oh Golly, Meredith, that sounds like really bad news. I have already paid (they didn't become "not a member" until after the translaction was complete), but thankfully it wasn't an enormous amount of money. I will get in touch with ebay admin straight away in that case. Thanks for your advice!

I hope I'm not being unduly alarmist. It is certainly my experience that most eBayers NEVER notify you that things have shipped no matter how much you bombard them with email asking for status so it may work out still. But I would still check with eBay admin - that you've paid, seller isn't responding to emails, and now they're not a member - what's up?

My experiences with ebay have all been successful, but quite a few have not corresponded via email, either to answer questions or to say whether items have been shipped.

I always let buyers know that their items have been shipped.

Did this seller have a good feedback record? Was it all purchases rather than sales, this can be a pointer. This has been mentioned quite a lot on ebay forums.

Usually I think you'll find most stitchers are honest sellers and buyers.

Hope you managed to sort out your problems.

The latest news is that I have received an automatically generated email from PayPal saying that the seller has created a postage 'label' for my purchase with the Canadian postage service and gave me a tracking number. I checked it against the post's web site and the only information they provided was a date for this number- the same date as the PayPal email- so I'm not sure if this dates relates to the 'creation of the label' or if it's the actual send date. Anybody know about this? Either way, I think this has to be good news right?

Thanks for everybody's reassurance- sometimes buying things off the net can be so nerve racking I wonder whether it's worth it. Thank goodness for SQ!

Yay! After 5 weeks of uncertainty, I finally received my TW kit yesterday and it's all in one piece!! As I suspected, the postage as per the stamp on the parcel is half of what the lady charged me, but I don't mind, I'm just glad to finally get my dragon! So, all's well that ends well, but I think it'll be a looooong time before I order anything off Ebay again!

I tend to avoid doing business with the general public... if it's not a qualified merchant (like SQ here), then I dont buy things from them.

I know that sounds cold, but there are too many people out there trying to get over...
