Just because I really am a nosy so and so:

I'm just wondering if there are any male stitchers out there in our little community, and if so how they got started in the finer needle arts and what they like working on. I know we usually think of sewing as a 'woman's' activity so I'm fascinated by the men who choose to do this and how they were roped into it! I know they're out there... hiding somewhere...

I wondered if we had any, too - there are a few in my Yahoo groups, and one of them is one of the most prolific stitchers I've ever seen. He had a big write-up in a Nordic Needle newsletter, has Gloriana silk threads named for him (his fur babies, actually), etc. My husband - nothing doing. He'll pick my stuff up to move it out of the way, but that's as close as he'll come to it, even though I've told him it would be a perfect hobby for him - he's one of those who must constantly be doing something, or he gets really irritable, and he wouldn't read a book to save his life. Not going to happen. Which I guess is okay, because he would have to get his own stash - I ain't sharin'!

I am a man who has been doing needlework for over 30 years. I began with needlepoint and then switched to cross stitch after 4 or 5 years. I picked up neeedlework from my wife, who now is a quilter (along with both of our daughters).

I have always liked big projects that take a long time, so I am happy with the SQ projects. I am working on my third (In Schwabing by Gabriele Munter) and estimate another year to completion.

Lovely to hear from you, Ed. Your current project sounds like a very rewarding one. It's interesting to hear how you got into cross stitch, I suppose you must be attracted to fine work with the hands, as we all are! And do you have other male friends who also cross stitch? It seems that there are not many here in our little SQ community, or are they perhaps all hiding in the woodwork?

Nope, not that one. I am in BAPXS, The Sampler Life, Long Dog Sampler Group, and Chatelaine SUpport group. If you are interested in any of them, I had links in here soemwhere to them - well, probably not the Chatelaine one, as I just recently joined that one. You might check out BAPXS - Big A** Projects in Cross Stitch - any SQ definitely qualifies as that, though the actual definition of BAP is anything that feels like a BAP Wink

You're right- those links are in the buy/sell/swap forum... just don't know if I can keep up with any more forums, and the SQ one is so nice... Razz
