Well this topic makes me realise that we really should have an art forum as well, afterall SQ is as much about art as it is about stitching... well almost as much.

As you might know, I am a translator, and recently I was given a project to translate the catalogue for an art exhibition at a private gallery. The exhibition was about Russian and German avant-garde painting, but also touched on French, Swiss and Italian works. Avant-garde includes such movements as expressionism, cubism, fauvism, abstraction, impressionism, art nouveau, dada, rayonism, cloisonnism, synthetism, modernism, futurism, orphism, primitivism, constructivism, exoticism, Dionysism, suprematism, symbolism, surrealism and many other -isms. It's most widely known heroes include Cezanne, Marc, Munter, Matisse, Gaugin, Van Gogh, Picasso, Kandinsky, Macke, Degas, Monet, Konchalovsky, Delaunay, Pechstein, Tappert and Toulouse-Lautrec.

The catalogue I translated gave a short art history of the period and its influences, including a look at the doings of several avant-garde groups such as Der Blaue Reiter, Die Brucke, the Knave of Diamonds, the Nabis and the Blue Four. And then it went on to give detailed descriptions of each of the works included in the exhibition. I found myself absorbed in the world of art (even though this is not my personal favourite period) and talking of brushstrokes and hues and depth and chiaroscuro. It was great fun! And I also learnt alot, and now I look at the paintings from that period with a slightly different eye. You should check out the patterns Meredith has made from art from this period- very interesting stuff! Very Happy

Wow, that sounds like a really neat project you had! I know I wish I had opportunities to delve into art more, but right now, it just doesn't fit into my day-to-day, except in the images I have around me (I'm a calendar collector). I only knew about 1/2 of the -isms you listed, so I could definitely have some educational opportunities Smile

Do you know if this exhibit you did the work on has any info online?
