Yeah, it would seem we are one of only a few states that go back this early - we have gone back as early as Aug 4th. I remember always going back the week around our Labor Day - always in August, but late. But growing up up north, no A/C in our old schools, so we couldn't go back too early. Down here, they all have A/C, so why not? They get out around May 20th. Though I used to like to vacation in August, when the summer rates would drop mid-August. About 5 more years, and I can do that again...

And to make this stitching-related, hopefully I can get back into the normal weekly routine - practice on whatever nights, and no one going anywhere doing anything so I can sit and stitch the other nights. Once we get through the next three tournament weekends, but since it's too hot to stitch, I'm not missing that much..

Oh, my goodness, I'd completely forgotten, all you poor people over there are currently suffering sweletring heat while we're still rugging up and putting the heater on! I know the worst time in my stitching history was in Malta in mid-summer: I couldn't bear to even touch my piece!

Hopefully this will work...

As you can hopefully see, Grandad's nearly done, but I've moved on to Nanny in the hopes that I might get at least some of her face done! Shocked

If the photobucket thing hasn't worked, you can see the pictures on here

That's going to be really neat - don't fret over the deadline! If you show whatever you have done at the time, they will be awed by it, I have no doubt!

Looking very nice indeed! And the linen just makes it. I adore working on linen. After this unicorn gets done (in the next million years) I am going with some extra nice fabric for my next project. Thanks for the pictures.

Hey, time for an update. Only two weeks before the party, but progress has been made - I've got another two pages done, and am well on the way with the next.

I think it's reasonably certain that Nanny's face will be done, and a good proportion of her hair. Please forgive the fringes, it's just the way I work, with a waste knot and end. They'll be gone when it's done.
I've decided that the lettering that needs to go underneath might be best done in a variegated thread - it's kind of difficult to know what colour to go for with a diamond anniversary, so my Mum pointed out that diamonds reflect all the colours of the rainbow.
Does anyone have any suggestions what might be best? It needs to be really fine, as I'm stitching with one thread of DMC and that gets shredded quite quickly on this fabric.

Hi Emma

Welcome to SQ. Your latest cross stitch looks great, but I cannot believe the thread count you are using - 55 count - are you mad? (just joking Very Happy ) How are your eyes doing? Laughing

The progress you have made is great - how many more pages to go?

Happy stitching! Stitching Stitching Stitching

Do you have DMC Variations available? They don't really have a true rainbow-colored thread, but they have LOTS of variegated choices, if you can pick one color family.

One of my favorite, favorite, favorite cotton threads is Carrie's - if you have an LNS that carries them, you can go see them in person; if not, you can order from her online. She uses DMC as the base, and a really nice rainbow thread is Lumiere de Cheryl: http://www.carriesthreads.com/images/cheryl_pic.jpg
Here's Carrie's home page:

And here's a piece I did in this thread (though she has a group of other rainbow-like colors to choose from - have fun looking):

And for a $1 a skein, even if it doesn't work for this, you can probably use it for something else Smile If you'd like links to silks, just holler - Vikki Clayton has a pastel rainbow, but it's realllllyyyy light, and might not show up, depending on if your lettering is Xs or backstitched...

eta - This is looking really good - you are making great progress!! If you don't quite finish it up, but show them what you have so far, they will flip!!
