Hi

My name is Mariam and I am from Michigan City, IN, USA. This is my first post EVER! so I am very excited that I even found a members log in, let alone send a post.

I don;t know how I found this site but I did and love it. I purchased several charts, and the 1st one that I am planing to work on is the blue peacock. SO, has anybody worked or working on it?

I purchased the thread that is recommended but I am planning to change some of the blues and greens in the peacock using silk thread instead of DMC. Is this a good idea or not?

Hope to hear from you javascript:emoticon('Stitching')

PS
I love to cross stitch but my passion is embroidery. Does anyone out there know of any sites that cater to embroidery or suggestions on books and magazines?

Welcome Mariam! This site was my first post too and now I'm addicted! (But I only post to this site). I really can't help with your questions, as I'm working on my first SQ (Sunday Afternoon on Le Grande Jatte), and it is going very slowly but I'm loving every minute! There are quite the experts on here who will be able to answer about the silk, and probably embroidery, but my passion is cross stitch and this is the best site ever.

Look forward to hearing more from you, and best of luck with the peacock picture!

Hi, Mariam! Welcome to SQ. I haven't done Blue Peacock, but it looks gorgeous. I have only worked with DMC on Meredith's patterns, so I'm no help on changing some of the DMC to silks. The important thing is how it looks to you, so you could always try it and if you don't like it, take out the silks. Just remember that you won't see a lot of the subtelty right away, so it may be tough to know how you really like it until you're far into the piece. Maybe you should mark the pattern for the stitches you changed to silk? Also, I myself wouldn't use variegated silks in SQ patters.

Anyway, welcome, and Happy Stitching! Very Happy

Welcome, Miriam. The more the merrier, I always say.
I don't use silks so haven't an answer for you. Someone here will, though.

Hi Mariam,

Welcome to the site. Whatever you feel is right when choosing threads for a design is fine, as it is your work and your decision. I often change threads.

As for embroidery sites (I also embroider) I found that if you go onto Google and enter free hand embroidery patterns, then you'll be inundated with stuff. I did just that and found some fantastic things. In particular, I found Needle'nThread a very good site, but you'll see for yourself what a wealth of choice there is....a positive Aladdin's cave.

One of my favourite sites is www.themadsamplar.com, which a book site for all kinds of needlework, plus the lady who runs it is now organising a supplies side. I've just looked through that side and it's very good indeed. Go have a look at the whole site and you'll be bankrupt(unless you bury your credit card/cheque book/stash)...pure bliss.

Have fun, and enjoy everything.
