Cross Stitch Patterns by Scarlet Quince | New here...and work in progress (photos)
Ok.. a busy week as my youngest turned 4 yesterday and we held the party last weekend, complete with home made and sunstantial buffet lunch AND a home made decorated Birthday Cake.
Luckily I gained some stitching time back while having to wait for over an hour in the Lung Specialists waiting room while he attended an emergancy .. it paid off in a big jump in stitching the shaddow at the bottom of the plate... I was also the least frustrated about waiting.
Lots of productive stitching, and good comments and a fellow patient resolved to bring her crochet in future. All in all I call that a good stitching week despite spending an entire weekend in the kitchen.
and a small diversion... ok.. so it's a large one LOL .. I'm SO DELIGHTED that as a non cake baker I had ths work out !
YES !!! a cake for non cake bakers like me!!!
I can't say loudly enough what a NON-cake baker I am, but.. I *did* promise DS a cake for this birthday (what *was* I thinking?!!! ) ...
FINIALLY I have success with a cake!!! HISTORY has been made in this household!!!! Yeah!!!!
the option was one deep cake or two shallower ones.. I took the two pan option and got two HUGE cakes !
( goodbye to my normal " pancake" cakes of the past LOL)
it is a very moist cake and I luckily buttered my pans and then lined them with baking paper... had I not done so, I might have been have troubles to get them out of the pans.
HUGE !.. Light ! moist !!!
the " trailer" is actually a shop-bought chocolate cake that I bought as " back up cake" because I had so little faith in my cake baking skills... wow did it NOT compare to Lynn's..
the cake: decorated
Guests even inhailed the crumbs !
I mean.. stitching is something that i'm comfortable with.. I can DO stitching..
...cakes on the other hand ever since childhood have been those dense heavy flat brick-like objects that I could reproduce with alarming ease. Even my -lightest-cake-baker-on-the-planet- Grandma never lived to see me produce a non heavy cake.
Surely you know the sort of cake I mean, someone like me somewhere must have infliced a piece on you some time in your life, right?
... you have to really push hard to get the knife to cut a slice, and instead of it melting in your mouth you are forced to chew and chew on this dry flavourless lump and endure the " polite" smiles and comments that people feel obliged to make as they secretly fear that in spite of scientific evidence to the contary, that cake might break teeth and this might not be their lucky day.
" it's good, really it is " ... liar.. I just ate a piece too and it's tough and horrible. The icing I added later is the only redeeming feature. But Thank you for trying hard to spare my feelings. My best friend laughs and says " at least you are a good cook in everything EXCEPT cakes" That's better... honesty.
So NOW those days are gone !!! People can look forward to one of my cakes at last !
With this cake I've officially joined the Cake Bakers Club... and you better believe that I'm enjoying the moment.
So ... now you know why you get more photos of cake today than cross stitch... history has been made and heck my week, no whole year too. Now I smugly want a LARGE , glitzy, tacky and very noticable official " joined the REAL cake bakers" medal, it's taken me long enough to earn it after all.
My goodness! I never knew it was possibe to get so excited about cake!! But I suppose that if you haven't been able to do it all your life than it would be rather a proud moment to have made such a wonderful cake! Well done you
Now if I could just achieve the same thing with eggs...
quote:Originally posted by Katie One really tacky official ribbon comming up!!! The ones with lots of glitter glue lettering and jewels......ok the bedazzeler machine went crazy.
it's just so nice ... no... WONDERFUL to have a success after failure after failure since childhood.
My Grandma would have been SO proud of me, she had seen some REALLY flat and heavy cakes from me and even when we made cakes side by side and she step by step guided me and our two pans went into the oven together, hers would be the skyscaper and mine could have been a street cobble.
She would try so hard to put a brave face on it and encouraged me always and she is the main reason that cooking is my other passionate hobby... only cakes were a mystery that we never solved in her lifetime.
(winking) Alanna will understand my childish delight completely one day when she reaches egg eggacting perfection
The stitching is going well too... even with the kids swimming lessons, music lessons, homework , housework, cooking for fun and a full time job, and getting back into my daily torture routine (the dreaded treadmill) squeezing in the stitching minutes IS possible if you try hard enough. The trick is not to waste time once you sit to stitch...ie) no dreaming about the next section to stitch or messing around searching for the colour that's almost running out on the bobbin... have it all ready and sit and STITCH.
I keep my needle threaded and the thread in place so that I don't mess around with that either, if it's ready to go and it's possible to add the odd stitch at various moments, or 10 or 100... depending on the length of the moments.
At the moment I'm impatient and would like to stitch all day... but first the small matter of work... then the weekend ... yeah!
I hope that everyone's stitching is going brilliantly too !
Ok.. quick update tonight.. I stepped onto my torture apparatus (treadmill) today after work and had the bright idea ( ok, ... not so bright idea) that it would be good to increase the distance, the result is that i'm now as stiff as blazes and too sore to stitch tonight. Bummer.
Oh well.. here's an update of the efforts of the last week.... lot of shaddow stitching of the plate and all those shades of grey make a nice change from all those shades of purple and blues LOL .

I'm off to bed for an early night and hopefully after a good nights rest my joints, ligaments and muscles will have forgiven me
