Matting is a personal preference. Some look better with it and some without. It keeps the stitiches off the glass. I do most of my on framing. Not a professional, but keep on learning. this (if it works) is a picture of fabric used as a matting. The work itself is mounted on foam board. I buy old and new frames at yards sales. fix themup and use them. Another hobby in itself.

Hi Alanna, Some of the frames I get at yard sales and thrift shops have glass. I buy mat pieces at the local framing store sometimes. She sells the ones she "mis-cuts" for .50 or a dollar. I have learned how to change the size of the mats and also cut down a frame if need be. I have tried to cup my own glass, but end up breaking more than I get right, so I get the size I need cut at the local glass store. It takes time, but I enjoy experimenting, mounting, cutting, sawing and painting. I will put on a picture later of one I cut the mat down to fit.
