Adding sparkle     Reply with quote

Hi ya'll
Haven't been here in a while. I had asked one time about adding some glittery thread or at least a pearly thread to the wings of the fairy I am working on. But I realize I am not sure which stitches I want to add it too. If I wait till the wings are finished can I add it over top or will it be to bulky? Also afraid the stitching will be so tight I wont be able to add it then.
I guess I could make a copy and color in the wings to see where I would add the sparkle.
What do you think?

What fabric are you stitching on? That may determine your options.

My experience: I did TW's The Castle (the one with the dragon on top of the castle), 2/2 on 36ct linen (mostly blends, so had to use 2 strands); the entire dragon is covered in a layer of Kreinik Blending filament, several colors, though most of them have a rainbow effect to them, so subtle color changes; I used a green-based one on the green, gold based on the yellow, blue-based on the blue areas, etc. I only did the first pass of a stitch over top of the DMC stitching: ////
It doesn't show up very well in photos, but you might get the idea - this is my album for that project: https://www.flickr.com/photos/rifestitch/albums/72157632177933914

Right now, I have Wiehenberg's Dragon Quaker as a WIP, which I am doing 1/2 on 36ct fabric, using Threadworx threads. On this one, I am putting a shimmer of metallic over the dragon motifs only, this time using Glisson Gloss Rainbow Blending Filament, which is a bit finer than the Kreinik BF, and a better fit for adding to a single strand of regular floss. I am putting this in as a 2nd pass over the original stitching, so I can ensure it lays on top of or beside the cotton, without having to worry about any twist. Again, you really can't see it very well in the photo, but it really sparkles in person - scroll about 1/2 way through this blog post for the dragon: http://rifestitch.jaysez.org/2016/04/sprinter-an-update.html

And there are all kinds of metallics heavier than filament, but it depends on what fabric you are using & how you want to incorporate it; Joan Elliott fairies (and probably Mirabilia/Nora Corbett) can have either the entire wing stitched in #4 Kreinik, or all the outlines & veins done in it: https://www.flickr.com/photos/rifestitch/12291334204/in/album-72157640458675536/

So I think you could very easily add some sparkle. I would maybe get a spool of Kreinik BF and a card of the Glisson Gloss and do a little test stitch. The thing with a filament, they are not really opaque, so you could really add a color over ALL the colors in your wings, and it won't obscure that base stitching - see the color changes in my Wiehenberg dragon, that is all the Threadworx thread, because I've used a pearl white BF that only adds sparkle, no real color at all - it lightened it overall a tiny bit, almost imperceptibly. And I am all about adding sparkle, be it metallic or beads Smile

Let us know what you decide to do!
