Question about cross stitch patterns of ebay     Reply with quote

I know that this question is probably going to sound stupid, so I will apoloze before I even start the question. I was looking at cross stitch pattern on ebay and there were several that I though were pretty picture. Several that I like were by artist William Adolphe Bouguereau. I noticed though that the person that did the cross stitch pattern called the picture by another name and not by what the artist called the painting. Is this allowed? And are these under copy right? I don't know. One of the paintings I loved was called
Idylle Enfantine but one ebay it is called Two Sisters. I just don't understand why you would not put the original name for the cross stitch patter like Scarlet Quince does. THe other painting that I loved was called "At the fountain" and on ebay it was called "Drink at the Well". I was just wondering and I would also love to see some of more of Bouguereau work from Scarlet Quince, so I would like to suggest any of his painting as a pattern. I am new at doing cross stitch like these. Right now, I am working on a cross stitch pattern of Elvis Presley. My grandmother is turning 82 and she is in love with anything Elvis. Sorry if the question sound stupid

Hmmm, not sure why they'd change the names, either... I am very wary of people selling charts on ebay, as you never know what you are going to get; an illegal copy? I know tens of people who've fallen into that pit. Something that is copyrighted, but someone has a cross stitch program, which you can use to convert whatever you want, for your own personal use, but you certainly aren't allowed to sell it without the copyright owner's permission.

My advice, which you can take or leave as you see fit, would be to avoid that seller; might not be entirely on the up-and-up - a good example of Buyer Beware, maybe. Which certainly is NOT to demean any of the many reputable ebay dealers out there, of course (I don't look for much xstitch stuff on ebay, though I do buy beads there, a LOT).

My experience of buying patterns on ebay is limited too. I've bought a kit that was out of print but it was still in tact so I knew it was on the up & up.

Could just be a matter of different translations...
If you go to:
http://www.bouguereau.org/
you should see a whole whack of his paintings.

What is this expression "on the up-and-up"? Does it mean legitimate? Rolling Eyes

Hooray! I speak American! When I'm translating I occasionally have clients request US English so I have to change all my spelling around to mom and center and encyclopedia, and I also modify my vocabulary to makes sweets and lollies candy, rockmelon cantaloup and softdrink soda, etc. but there are always new expressions to learn!

Getting back on topic I also meant to say that I love Bouguereau too and that as all his paintings' titles were originally in French, any English title is open to criticism that it's not the original and often the same work will have many different English names. This person may simply have looked these up on the Internet and found different translations to the one you are used to.

I really like his work and I hope that I can get around to cross stitching one after I finish Elvis. THanks for the information, maybe, you are right and the translation was different. I think this site said that you live in Australia. That is one place I would love to visit oneday. I cant believe all the different countries that have people who love to cross stich. I am really going to like learning from everyone.
