I wish more people would post, too. I check most days, but there's rarely anything new.
I've never seen or heard of marking the fabric. Can you tell me what and how you mark.
You use a contrasting color thread to mark off sections of the pattern... either just the centre lines (if you prefer to start from there), or pages in the case of big designs, or every ten squares (corresponding to the graph paper). It's just a way of keeping track. On smaller/simpler pieces, you can work all of one color, then all of another color, etc. over the entire design, instead of doing a couple of stitches in one color, then the contiguous stitches.
If you still don't understand, maybe somebody else can explain it better.
