Hey Rife, I was hoping you'd reply I love the Cheryl thread, but I think it's maybe a little too bright - would you enlighten me about the silk pastel rainbow, please?
Not counting the page I'm on now, I have 4 pages left, although none of them are complete pages. They probably add up to one whole page altogether, but since there's now less than 2 weeks to go, I think it'll still not be done, although annoyingly close. I'm stitching all the hours God sends in a desperate attempt to get it done!
I have often thought I must be mad with this 55 count, I don't know what I was thinking when I bought it! BUT, it does look really nice. I had to buy a little clip on LED light to help me see. My eyesight's awful already (without my glasses on, all I see is blurs!) and this probably isn't helping, but then, I have worked on smaller counts of silk gauze successfully, so... I think when I go back to 18 count it's going to look huge.

That's a very dangerous site! Can't believe how many nicey things there are on there. I've ordered the pastel rainbows, so we'll see what that looks like. I can see me spending a lot of money very quickly on there.
You're a bad influence, rife.
Should I mention that Vikki has the entire DMC line converted to her silks? No? Well, too late
Can you imagine doing L&U in silk? IF I had unlimited funds, you better believe it! Her silks are ridiculously affordable, but still, I bought 160ish skeins for my tiny L&U - and I had to spread that out over a few weeks - and that was before the last couple of price increases. Someday, someday.... Though, if DMC goes up to a dollar a skein (Joanns is selling it for 99 cents online), Vikki's silk will be worth the expense. For everyone outside the US that has always been mad that we pay so little for DMC here, it's about to change, I think
I can still get it for around 35 cents at Hobby Lobby - but I think before long we will all be paying a dollar or more. It just keeps creeping up a little at a time - it was 25 cents this time last year. That's roughly a 40% hike in a year. Our time is coming, I can feel it...

Yes, but it's a 350% increase in about 18 years, and most of that increase in the last 4-5 years - what else has increased that much in that time, other than healthcare? Considering that those down under and in other far-flung areas have always paid exorbitant prices for it, I think DMC is either feeling the recession, or realizing what they are losing out on by not charging us what they charge everyone else. And at 40% increases, it's NOT that far from a dollar. Since lots of online sources are already at or near a dollar, it won't be too long before the big box stores follow suit - how could they not? The only other local place I have to get it, it is 49 cents (last I looked - could be even more), up from 35 about this time last year. The 30-40% increase seems to be standard, regardless of the starting point; from what I have seen, those of you outside the US markets haven't had the increases - but if you did, would you be wondering where it's heading?
I'm not trying to get into a "Oh us poor Americans, we're going to have to pay more for it, just like everyone else" thing, I was simply making an observation that things are changing, and this whole DMC thing - including the fact that it's not even carried in so many of the places it used to be in (which I am sure accounts for some of the increase) - is another HUGE symptom of the decline of the non-knitting needlearts, because everyone needs instant gratification now, and something that takes months to do is too big a commitment for people. It's very sad - and though I know manufacturers have to make a profit, increases are making it even harder for those of us still in it to keep up.
The original point, though, was that for the cost you pay for DMC these days, you could almost do the same projects in silks from Vikki - and most of the people on Vikki's forum do not do ANYTHING in DMC anymore (though they primarily are sampler people, not BAPs like SQ designs...)
I know what you mean about the price of DMC. We are really luck to pay only $.35 a skien, but I can remember paying waaaay less than that. Last year when DMC was having its problems, I started kitting up an SQ patterns, not only due to the price but availability. I'm running out of patterns to kit up, though, so I guess I need to order some more! Of course, based on Murphy's Law, I have ensured that the price of DMC will remain the same!
By the way Emma, your piece looks great, and I know your Grandparents will be thrilled with your gift!
