I have a tip which I hope might be helpful. I am stitching Heraldic Chivalry in 16 point Aida and the sewing area is about 34 inches wide. I scoured the internet looking for a 36" scroll rod and was stunned at the asking price. My husband heard me muttering rude things at the computer and asked if he could help, when I explained the situation he said "no big deal I can make you a couple of those". He bought two wood dowels, took four screws out of old rods I don't use, put them in the ends of the dowels, atttached velcro first to the rods, then the Aida cloth and voila, the whole shebang for less than $10. Is my old man a genius or what ?
The genius part is that he actually did it!
I did the same thing when I started working on Sense of Light (or Sight), except that I had the type where the rods slip into a clamp-like side bar, if you know what I mean. I'm using it now for The Young Botanist, but it's really too big for that. I'll have to get another set of rods or something... it's starting to get awkward.
Know what you mean about awkward, I have a Gazelle Stand, which only clamps the work at one end so with something this big it wont hold it, so I have one end of the rods clamped in the stand, I sit in the middle of the couch with the other freestanding end balanced on the arm of the couch and there's no room for anyone else to sit. Ask me if I care, this is cross-stitch nothing and takes precedence over that
For those not so handy, or who can't be bothered, there is an English company called siesta frames - http://www.siestaframes.com/acatalog/rotating__roller__tapestry__frames.html - who make scroll frames up to 42" wide, for less than £20 (about $25, I guess). I've used them before, and their service is excellent. They also ship all over the world, including the US and Australia.
Considering my husband made the whole shooting match, including the velcro, for less than $10, these prices seem a teensy bit steep. approximately 100% mark-up. Maybe we should go in business for ourselves
