I need to get new needles, most of mine have broken. I only have size 24 left which is really to big to use with 22 count. I was useing size 26 but was wondering if I would be better getting 28s. I just not sure because I was afraid they would break to easy. What size do you use.
I use 26s on 32 count and don't have any problems getting through the material on the last square, and they are good to thread. I use 28s when I am beading as I find them harder to handle (pinch grip) and have enough arm/rotator cuff issues without adding to them. In saying that, I do have a 22 count project on the go at the moment (not SQ) and use just one thread and 28s - can't imagine using blended threads and 22 count - you're a braver woman than me. It's horses for courses really and whatever you feel comfortable with.
I use 28 petites for everything these days, except when using a big metallic braid, like Kreinik. Anything bigger is like stitching with a twig IF I am going to break a needle, it's going to be on my SQ on 22ct - some of the areas on Lady & Unicorn are very tight with all the confetti, and I will admit to having snapped a couple of eyes on L&U, though usually in the act of weaving under on the back and trying to extract the needle back out, not in the actual making of a stitch. Now, the one I am working on at the moment, Monet's Water Lilies, is on 20ct, but too, the design isn't nearly as complicated, so I do not expect to have areas as tightly packed as L&U has.
I really like Bohin needles - but they do not make petites, and I really need petites, so I live with John James, which I think have a weaker eye than other 28s.
Give 28s a try - I use them on all fabric, regardless of count. IF I could get a petite petite - basically an eye with a pointy end, then I'd really be in business!

But but but... what would you hold on to?
The eye with the floss in it - hopefully that would cut down the number of times I stitch along with no thread, too Everyone in my local stitching group kids me on having such teeny tiny orts - if I could get those down to about 1/4" or less, I'd be happy Eliminating half the needle length is the only way to do that! Of course, I'd probably lose it when weaving tails under, so not a great idea, just one that crosses my mind frequently, especially when I am trying to get THAT ONE LAST STITCH out of a length of thread!

I use size 28 with 22-count. Yes, they do bend or break easier, especially the eye, but I figure that's a small price to pay. If you're going to do a solidly stitched piece on 22-count, you need a small needle to go into those holes where you may already have 3 threads going through it.
