Two sisters in complementary dresses -- the blonde girl in white with blue accents, and the brunette in blue with white accents -- sitting in a white-panelled room at a sunny window which gives a view of a rose garden, trimming sunflowers to be put into blue-and-white oriental vases. Though they are dressed in the style of the 1820s, the sunflowers and the colors blue and white are emblematic of the aesthetic movement (art for art's sake) of the late 19th century when the picture was painted.
