Diego Rivera
La Fiesta del Maiz
Mexican peasants weaving a corn stalk into a cross and decorating it with tulips and daisies. Children are placing flowers and other offerings, and a woman kneels with them. All are dressed in white. Behind them is a field of corn stubble, and behind that cacti and Joshua trees. Corn is traditionally an important staple in Mexico and the festival was originally to worship the corn goddess but it eventually became blended with Catholic worship. Baile en Tehuantepec
Also known as "Dance in Tehuantepec". Couples in brightly-colored traditional dress dancing in the square of a small southern Mexican town. Multi-colored flags are hung around the square, and behind a row of banana and fruit trees more ladies are seated, watching the dancing. (Social Realism, 1928)
Los Hijos de mi Compadre (Retratos de Modesto y Jesus Sanchez)
Also known as "My Godfather's Sons (Portraits of Modesto and Jesus Sanchez)". A portrait of two small solemn Hispanic boys dressed similarly, in pink and white striped jackets, yellow pants, and yellow hats. They are barefoot and posed against a two-tone orange wall. (Social Realism, 1930)
Nina con Alcatreces
Also known as "Girl with Calla Lilies". A young girl with ribbons braided into her hair holds an enormous bunch of calla lilies. She is facing away from us and wears a simple white blouse, pink belt, black skirt, and is barefoot. (Social Realism, 1941)
Cargador de Flores
Also known as "The Flower Carrier". A Mexican peasant man in white clothes, a yellow hat, and sandals crouches, with a huge wicker basket of pink daisies on his back supported by a yellow sling. A woman in a lavender shawl and orange skirt steadies the basket as the man attempts to rise to carry his flowers to market. (Social Realism, 1935)

Surprised! Tiger in a Tropical Storm

The sun has set but the red tints of sunset still show in the sky along with a full moon, a few stars, and a couple of stray clouds.
