Three peasant women stooping to gather grain dropped by the wheat harvesters, seen in the background with a cart holding the last load. The gleaners have their aprons knotted up to make sacks to hold the wheat they collect. Though this was a traditional part of the agricultural cycle, and today seems a charming reminder of bygone customs, this painting offended many when it was first shown by its commentary on grinding rural poverty. It is often paired with The Angelus, which we also offer in a compatible size. (1857)
