Miyamoto Musashi Killing a Giant Nue - Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Counted Cross Stitch Pattern

The famed ronin, or wandering samurai, Miyamoto Musashi, spearing a nue. A nue is a legendary creature with the head of a monkey, the body of a racoon dog, the legs of a tiger, and a snake's tail, and it can transform itself into a black cloud and fly. This particular monster appears to be more of an alligator or dragon. Miyamoto Musashi was a real person but after his death many incredible stories were told about him, giving him a larger-than-life persona. Here he stands with one foot on the nue as he stabs it, scowling fiercely. (We also offer a version without the text annotations.)
