Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert
Lion and His Prey
An African lion standing over his kill, a springbok (or perhaps another kind of antelope), in a grassy area under a large bush. He sniffs the air and switches his tail tensely. (1894)

Utagawa Kuniyoshi
Miyamoto Musashi Killing a Giant Nue
The famed ronin, or wandering samurai, Miyamoto Musashi, spearing a nue. A nue is a legendary creature with the head of a monkey, the body of a racoon dog, the legs of a tiger, and a snake's tail, and it can transform itself into a black cloud and fly. This particular monster appears to be more of an alligator or dragon. Miyamoto Musashi was a real person but after his death many incredible stories were told about him, giving him a larger-than-life persona. Here he stands with one foot on the nue as he stabs it, scowling fiercely. (We also offer a version without the text annotations.)

Peacocks and Peonies I
A domed stained-glass window showing a peacock sitting on a peony tree bearing red and white flowers, with another peacock at the base of the tree. The background is a deep blue sky above an intensely green hill. The border of the window consists of abstract geometric and floral elements. The background (upper corners) is not stitched, and white fabric is recommended. We also offer a version without the borders, Peacocks and Peonies I (detail) and the companion window, Peacocks and Peonies II. (Art Nouveau, 1893)
Peacocks and Peonies I (detail)

The background is a deep blue sky above an intensely green hill. We also offer a companion, Peacocks and Peonies II (detail) as well as the full window, Peacocks and Peonies I. (Art Nouveau, 1893)
Peacocks and Peonies II
A domed stained-glass window showing a peacock perched on a peony tree bearing red and white flowers overlooking an intensely green valley and blue sky. The border of the window consists of abstract geometric and floral elements. The background (upper corners) is not stitched, and white fabric is recommended. We also offer a version without the borders, Peacocks and Peonies II (detail), as well as the companion window, Peacocks and Peonies I. (Art Nouveau, 1893)

In The Greenhouse
Terra cotta pots containing red and yellow roses, calla lilies, and pink-and-red azaleas against a white-washed greenhouse wall. (Also known as "Side of a Greenhouse". 1870-80?)

Sir Edwin Landseer
Monarch of the Glen
A noble stag with 12-point antlers standing on a grassy hill, with the misty mountains of Scotland behind him. (1851)
The Arab Tent
A white mare with chestnut foal sheltering on a carpet under a canopy with a couple of hounds, with monkeys quarreling over an orange above them
Dignity and Impudence
A long-suffering large dog taking a well-deserved rest in his kennel -- but no rest is to be had: a busy little white terrier has pushed in next to him. The big dog seems to be trying to pretend that the other dog doesn't exist. A perfect image of doggy embarrassment! (1839)

Fitz Hugh Lane
Lumber Schooners at Evening on Penobscot Bay
Sailing lumber schooners anchored for the night in Penobscot Bay. Timber is cut in the Maine woods, rolled downhill, and chuted onto these cargo ships drawn in close to shore, but now they are at rest as the sun goes down, turning the sky pink over the western islands. (1860)

Dorothea Lange
Migrant Mother
A destitute migrant worker with two of her seven hungry children. A photographer for the Farm Security Administration, Lange used her photos to bring the plight of migrant workers and sharecroppers to public attention. The California pea crop had failed so there was no work, and this woman, Florence Owens Thompson, had just sold her tent to buy food. (1936)

Carl Larsson
Lisbeth Reading
A young girl sitting on a built-in red and green bench reading a book which is lying on a table before her. She is wearing a brown-and-white checked dress, a red-striped apron, and black shoes and stockings. A spectacular Christmas cactus in bloom sits in the center of the glossy table. Though a doorway coats and hats can be seen, hanging on pegs along a staircase. (1904)
Breakfast in the Open
A Swedish family preparing to have breakfast in a birch grove across a river from their house. A young girl in white leans daydreaming against a tree, while an old man and a young girl tune their fiddle and lute. Women are unpacking food and utensils and setting the table, with a young man in suit and hat lounging by the table watching their preparations. (1913)
Flower Window
A little girl in a purplish dress watering plants on a bright window sill. There are fuschias, carnations, and geraniums as well as ivy and other non-flowering plants. Behind her is a round table with two chairs pulled up to it, with some knitting on the table. On the left is a couch draped with blue and white striped material and a cushion with a poppy design. On the right is a dresser. (1894)

Clarisse Madelene Laurent
Eggs
A still life of raw eggs in a saucer. The broken shells are next to the saucer on the table. There is a bunch of parsley behind them, and a fork is ready to whisk the eggs. A pewter coffee pot completes the scene. (1892)

Sir Thomas Lawrence
Pinkie
The famous young lady in a white gown with a pink-sashed Empire waist and a pink bonnet with ribbons blowing loose framing her curly brown hair. She stands on a rather abstract hilltop against a sky of blue with white clouds which are becoming stormy. Her traditional companion is Gainsborough's The Blue Boy, which we offer in a compatible size. (1794)
Master Charles William Lambton
A portrait of a young boy in a red velvet suit, reclining on a vaguely suggested rocky outcrop. He has a dreamy expression on his delicate face. This painting is commonly known as "The Red Boy".

Lord Frederic Leighton
Flaming June
A young woman in a gauzy orange gown curled up asleep on a formally carved sone balcony overlooking a silvery blue sea. Her warm skin tones, auburn hair, and the brown and red-brown crepe coverlet all echo the theme of summery warmth. (1895)
Eucharis, A Girl with a Basket of Fruit
Eucharis, the most beautiful of Calypso's nymphs, meets Telemachus who is searching for his father, Odysseus when Telemachus is shipwrecked on Calypso's island (in a novel based on the Odyssey). They fall in love but must part as it is his duty to continue searching for his father. Here Eucharis, serene and composed, is carrying a basket of fruit on her head through a sunny portico. (1863)

Charles Robert Leslie
