Edward Hopper
Cobb's Barn and Distant Houses
An old red barn and outbuildings on a hill overlooking fields and faraway houses
Mansard Roof
Watercolor of an old three-story house with a mansard roof and yellow canvas awnings sheltering an upstairs porch from the sun. The house is closely surrounded by trees and shrubs. See Mansard Roof (smaller) for a smaller version (fewer stitches, slightly less detail) or compare them side by side.
Mansard Roof (smaller)
Watercolor of an old three-story house with a mansard roof and yellow canvas awnings sheltering an upstairs porch from the sun. The house is closely surrounded by trees and shrubs. See Mansard Roof for a larger version (more stitches, more detail) or compare them side by side.
Railroad Sunset
Spectacular sunset behind railroad tracks and a small building
Nighthawks
Three lonely people, solitary even when together, sit at a diner counter in Greenwich Village late at night, lost in their own thoughts. The bright fluorescent lights spill out onto the sidewalk of the deserted street with an eery green glow. See HOP004-D for a chart of a portion of this painting. (1942)
Nighthawks (detail)
Three lonely people, solitary even when together, sit at a diner counter in Greenwich Village late at night, lost in their own thoughts. The bright fluorescent lights spill out onto the sidewalk of the deserted street with an eery green glow. This is a portion of the complete painting; see HOP004 for the full painting. (1942)
Early Sunday Morning
The early morning sun highlights a row of storefronts with apartments above them on a deserted street. The long shadows of a fireplug and barber pole show the earliness of the hour, as well as the fact that the upstairs windows still have their curtains and blinds pulled. The red brick upper story, the green-painted lower story, yellow blinds and awnings, and the bright blue sky all contrast pleasingly. (1930)
Gas
A Mobil gas station with its famous flying horse sign on a lonely country road at dusk. The solitary attendant is making some adjustment to the bright red pumps. Light spills from the open door and windows of the little station house, lighting the dark pine trees that crowd in on every side. (1940)
From Williamsburg Bridge
A view from a bridge connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn of a quiet brownstone apartment building. It is built in the Romanesque Revival style popular in the late 19th century. A woman is seated in the window of one apartment, but otherwise, the place seems deserted. The bridge itself is not shown except for a little of the rail. (1928)

Pei-hung Hsu
Cat and Yellow Butterfly
A black and white cat stalks a yellow butterfly through a tree

Arthur Hughes
In the Grass
A young woman in a bodice and peasant blouse pensively toying with grasses and flowers

Edward Robert Hughes
Midsummer Eve
A girl crowned with leaves standing in a fairy ring in a forest glade lit up by the fairy lights
Night with Her Train of Stars and Her Great Gift of Sleep
Night, in a crown and deep blue gown, is followed by a train of baby stars, larks, and poppies. She carries one sleeping star, and presses her finger to her lips to warn the others not to awaken it.
Shadows rise. The lark sings on. The sun,
Closing his benediction,
Sinks, and the darkening air
Thrills with a sense of the triumphing night
Night with her train of stars
And her great gift of sleep. -- "Margaritae Sorori" by W. E Henley
(Pre-Raphaelite, 1912)
A Young Beauty
A portrait of a lovely young woman with brown hair and brown eyes against a background of early spring white flowers on leafless branches. She is wearing a dark green dress with a white fluted collar and has a few flowers in her hair. (Romantic, 1875)

Rudi Hurzlmeier
Krahe
A whimsical crow walking across a wintry field of stubble with a misshapen tree in the background. The crow is wearing dilapidated old boots and his feathers form an overcoat with a turned-up collar. He is thoughtfully chewing a straw in his beak.

John William Inchbold
A Study in March
Early spring landscape with bare trees, sheep, and wildflowers

Frank Tenney Johnson
Portrait of Ak-Ene-Ah
A portrait of an elderly Native American man dressed in fringed and beaded elkskin, holding a peace pipe. His long hair is braided and carries a couple of eagle feathers, and he gazes into the distance with great dignity. (1914)
Night Watch
A cowboy on horseback watching a herd of longhorn cattle through the night. They are on a rocky plateau with little vegetation except some sagebrush. There are mesas in the background, and another cowboy. The cowboy is relaxed, smoking with his arms crossed, and is wearing a hat, bandanna, leather vest, chaps, and boots. We also offer a detail from the painting showing just the cowboy and horse -- see JOH002-D. (1936)
Night Watch (detail)
A cowboy on horseback at night. The cowboy is relaxed, smoking with his arms crossed, and is wearing a hat, bandanna, leather vest, chaps, and boots. This is a detail from the full painting, which we also offer. See JOH002. (1936)
An Evil Omen
Two Indians on horseback crossing a rocky mountain pass just after sunset pause to watch a shooting star. They are wearing leather leggings, shirts, moccasins, and headbands, and one carries a rifle. One of the horses seems to notice the star as well. (1930)

Wassily Kandinsky
Squares with Concentric Circles
A study in how different color combinations are perceived. (1913)

Warren Kimble
Betty and Joe
Two folk-art style cats, one white, one black and white, on a carpet decorated with hearts. The background is red with branching plants with heart-shaped flowers. The original was painted on a board and our version retains some of the wood grain.
Spring Panel
A folk-art landscape in early spring. Tall trees are leafing out, but the red house below them has a good woodpile and smoke issuing from its chimney. Plants are emerging from plowed fields, and maple sap buckets are attached to one of the trees. The original was painted on a board and our version retains some of the wood grain. We also offer the other seasons, Summer, Fall, and Winter.
Summer Panel
A folk-art landscape in summer. A white house sits below tall trees and is surrounded by low leafy shrubs with a faint path through it. A few birds are soaring in the blue sky. The original was painted on a board and our version retains some of the wood grain. We also offer the other seasons, Spring, Fall, and Winter.
Fall Panel
A folk-art landscape in fall. A red schoolhouse amid tall trees turning golden and harvested fields. The roof of the school features lightning rods and a bell tower topped by a weathervane. The original was painted on a board and our version retains the wood grain look. We also offer the other seasons, Spring, Summer, and Winter.
Winter Panel
A folk-art landscape in winter. A white gothic-style church stands amid snow-covered hills. Tall trees with bare branches tower over it, and there are a couple of snow-laden pines next to it. The original was painted on a board and our version retains some of the wood grain. We also offer the other seasons, Spring, Summer, and Fall.
Nellie's Barn
A large black and white cow standing in a grassy field next to a red barn and other red farm buildings. There are a few trees behind the barn and some puffy white clouds in the sky. The original was painted on a panel and our version retains the wood grain look.
Church Birdhouse
A birdhouse made to look like a Gothic-style church, with narrow windows and a steeple. Two cardinals are perched beside it, one on the platform and one on a twig. Slender dogwood trees bloom behind the birdhouse, and a blue sky with small white clouds forms the background. The original was painted on a board and our version retains the wood-grain look.
American Farm
A folk-art farm with an American flag painted on the side of a red barn. There is also an American flag flying from the barn steeple. The sky is an American flag in shades of light blue and white. There are a few trees along a rail fence line, and in front of the barn is a crazy quilt of different crops, pumpkins, sunflowers, carrots, beets, and flowers.
Colonial Flag
A rustic American colonial flag with 11 stripes and 16 stars. The original was painted on a board, and our version retains the scratchers and wood-grain look of the original.
The Shelburne Barn
An old-fashioned round barn painted a cheerful red, built into the side of a grassy hill. There is a small cupola in the center of the black roof. The barn has many small windows and a fieldstone foundation. There is a fence and several trees along the ridgeline, with a few clouds in the blue sky. The original was painted on a board, and our version retains the scratchers and wood-grain look of the original.
