Rembrandt van Rijn
The Night Watch
Wealthy Dutch merchants of the 17th century as members of the militia company of Frans Banning Cocq (in the red sash) and Willem van Ruytenburch, his lieutenant, in yellow. It is clear from the careless handling of the muskets (one man's musket has just gone off directly behind the lieutenant's head) and the strange collection of weapons and armor that these are weekend warriors, more occupied with dressing up and parading than any useful civil defense. (1642)
The Syndics of the Clothmakers Guild
A group portrait of the officials of the Clothmakers Guild in a paneled room. Their job was to regulate the quality of cloth sold in Amsterdam. The five men in black with white collars and tall hats are seated at a table covered with a richly colored table rug. One is just rising from his chair. The man behind them without a hat is a servant. All are intently focused on the observer. (Baroque, 1662)
The Return of the Prodigal Son
The parable of the prodigal son being welcomed home by his father.
But when he came to himself he said, "How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough to spare, and I'm dying with hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and will tell him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight. I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.'"

He arose, and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
Rembrandt shows the father and son embracing, while the elder brother looks on disapprovingly. Two other men and a woman are also in the background, watching. We also offer a detail VRI003-D showing just the father and son. (1669)
The Return of the Prodigal Son (detail)
The parable of the prodigal son being welcomed home by his father.
But when he came to himself he said, "How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough to spare, and I'm dying with hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and will tell him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight. I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.'"

He arose, and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
This is a portion of the full painting showing just the father and son. We also offer the full painting VRI003 (1669)

The flowers include pink and white roses, a poppy, an orange daisy, lilacs, primroses, forget-me-nots, double hyacinths, and a blue and gold tulip. A finch is standing on the ledge looking at the flowers, and on the other side of the bouquet is a bird's nest containing a speckled egg. A large blue urn with gilded handles is behind the bouquet. (1810)
Cabbage Rose
A stem of pink cabbage roses, two open and one in bud, lying on a marble slab. A bunch of primroses lies next to them, with a spray of forget-me-nots.

Still Life Of Flowers In A Basket by an Alabaster Urn on a Marble Pedestal
An elaborate arrangement of flowers spilling out of a shallow basket resting on a carved table. Next to the flowers is a small marble column carved with Greek figures which is being used as a pedestal for an alabaster urn which has mermaid figures as handles. The bouquet includes roses, peonies, poppies, delphiniums, hibiscus, morning glories, primroses, columbines, and other flowers. There are also a couple of butterlies and other insects flitting about it. (1787)
Flowers in an Alabaster Vase and in a Basket, with a Bird's Nest
An onyx vase on an alabaster pedestal next to a basket, both filled with flowers, on a stone ledge. The flowers include white peonies, pink roses, hyacinths, delphiniums, lilacs, tulips, and a crown imperial. (1783)

Elihu Vedder
The Cup of Death

Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez

Velasquez is to the left, facing his canvas. On the right are a dog and two dwarves. Standing outside the picture are the king and queen, Philip IV and Mariana of Austra (reflected in the mirror at the back of the room). Other attendants are in the background. (Baroque, 1656)

The Kitchen Maid
A servant is pouring milk from an earthenware jug into a bowl on a draped table also holding a blue-and-white pitcher, a basket containing a round loaf of break, and several broken pieces of bread. A window with a broken pane casts light on the kitchen's mostly bare walls. The woman wears a white cap, yellow bodice, red skirt, and a blue apron. There is a footwarmer on the floor behind her. The painting on which this pattern is based is also sometimes known as "The Milkmaid". (1658)
