Jan van Eyck
The Arnolfini Marriage
A portrait of a Flemish couple in fur-trimmed clothes being married

Vincent Van Gogh
The Night Cafe
A small, gas-lit cafe at night. The walls are orange, the ceiling is green, and the floor is of coarse yellow boards. A few people are sitting at the small tables, some talking, others slumped in their seats. A man in a white suit stands at a billiards table in the center of the room. According to Van Gogh, this was a cafe de nuit, open all night. "Night prowlers" could take refuge there when they had no money to pay for a lodging, or were too drunk to be taken in. (Post-Impressionist, 1888)
Starry Night
A spectacularly star-lit night view of the Rhone River at Arles. Buildings along the river are dimly seen, as are several small boats moored for the night, but riverside lights are reflected as long yellow trails in the water. On the near shore, in the foreground, a man and a woman walking are dwarfed by the glorious lights. (Post-Impressionist, 1888)
Starry Night
A mountain village sleeps under a spectacular night sky, with huge glowing stars wheeling and tumbling about the sky, and a blazing yellow crescent moon. Looming blackly over the village is the top of a cypress tree. See VGO003-S for a smaller version (fewer stitches, slightly less detail) of this pattern, or compare them side by side. (Post-Impressionist, 1889)
Starry Night (smaller)
A mountain village sleeps under a spectacular night sky, with huge glowing stars wheeling and tumbling about the sky, and a blazing yellow crescent moon. Looming blackly over the village is the top of a cypress tree. See VGO003 for a larger version (more stitches, more detail) of this pattern, or compare them side by side. (Post-Impressionist, 1889)
Bouquet of Sunflowers
Rusty-orange sunflowers sprawling from a two-toned earthenware jug on an orange surface against a wall of Van Gogh's trademark yellow. The green leaves and a touch of blue are all that moderates the hot colors. (Post-Impressionist, 1888)
Cafe Terrace by Night
A brightly-lit sidewalk cafe under an awning in a village at night, with a few people lingering at the small tables. Though the stars are blazing in a deep blue sky, shops are still open and several people are strolling along the cobblestone street. All the activity is at a distance from us, though, creating a sense that we are observers rather than participants in this scene. (Post-Impressionist, 1888)
Fritillaries
A still life of a bouquet of orange fritillaries in a round brass pot, sitting on a surface streaked with red, against a speckled blue-green background. (Post-Impressionist, 1887)
Bouquet of Daisies and Anemones
A still life of rusty-red, yellow, and white chrysanthemums, blue anemones, and a few red nasturtiums in a pale blue ceramic vase. The background is abstract, with the vase sitting on a streaked surface against a speckled background that is blue above changing to red below. (Post-Impressionist, 1887)
The Bridge at Langlois
A mule-drawn covered wagon crossing a river on a drawbridge with stone abutments. Several women on the shore next to the bridge are taking advantage of the perfect weather to do their laundry in the river. A leaking rowboat is drawn up into the reeds nearby. The strong blues and oranges in this painting are particularly striking. (Post-Impressionist, 1888)
Irises
Purple irises with golden beards and silvery blue-green leaves growing in orange soil. Somehow one white iris has also crept in. Behind them is a bed of orange crysanthemums. (Post-Impressionist, 1889)
Still Life: Irises
Powder-blue Japanese irises with a few blue-green leaves standing in a yellow clay pot against a starkly yellow background. See VGO010-S for a smaller version (fewer stitches, slightly less detail) of this pattern, or compare them side by side. (Post-Impressionist, 1890)
Still Life: Irises (smaller)
Powder-blue Japanese irises with a few blue-green leaves standing in a yellow clay pot against a starkly yellow background. See VGO010 for a larger version (more stitches, more detail) of this pattern, or compare them side by side. (Post-Impressionist, 1890)
Pine Trees against the Light
Gnarled, windswept, and broken pine trees looming over a road along which a woman carrying a basket on her back is walking, while behind them the setting sun turns the whole sky golden. (Post-Impressionist, 1889)
Olive Fields
Twisted and gnarled olive trees with gray-green leaves seem to dance in a hummocky red clay orchard under the intense heat of the sun in a blazing yellow sky. Blue mountains far in the distance are the only promise of coolness. (Post-Impressionist, 1889)
Poppy Field
A small farm with a crazy quilt of fields. Many different crops are growing, several sprinkled with red corn poppies. Hedges separate several of the fields and a windbreak line of cypress trees shielding the yellow stucco farmhouse marches off into the distance. Across a lane from the fields is a small shed. (Post-Impressionist, 1889)
Vincent's Chair
Still life of a yellow wicker chair with a pipe and tobacco pouch on the seat. It stands on a red tile floor beside a pale blue wall and a door painted turquoise blue. Behind the chair in a corner is a wooden box with some other belongings jumbled into it. (Post-Impressionist, 1888)
Boats on the Beach
Several brightly and ornately painted sailboats drawn up onto a sandy beach out of the reach of the breaking waves. Not far offshore, several more sailboats seem to be beating against the wind which is almost palpable in the brush strokes used for the sky. (Post-Impressionist, 1888)
Still Life with Bible
A battered family Bible open to Isaiah 53, a chapter which discusses the eventual rewards for patient earthly suffering, on a covered table next to a paperback copy of Emile Zola's "La Joie de Vivre" (The Joy of Living), a novel in which the optimism of one character is contrasted with the depression and resentment of the others. An extinguished candle stands beside the two books. This pattern is solidly stitched. (Post-Impressionist, 1885)
The Yellow House
The house in Arles where Van Gogh lived. His description:
My house here is painted butter yellow on the outside and has solid green window shutters; it is located directly in a square with green park full of plane-trees, oleanders and acacias. And inside all the walls are painted white and the floor is tiled in red. Yet the most striking thing is the glaring blue sky. Inside the house I can really live and breathe and think and paint.
In this view, people are walking about the streets and sitting outside a cafe. A train is passing over a low bridge on the right. (Post-Impressionist, 1888)
Almond Blossom
Branches of an almond tree in bloom against a turquoise background. Van Gogh painted the almond blossoms, a symbol of new life, in honor of his nephew's birth. (Post-Impressionist, 1890)
Four Cut Sunflowers
Four bright sunflower heads cut with short stems, lying on a blue surface. Three are facing up to show the seeds, while the fourth is face down. The rest of the background is abstract, dark leafy green, and strawlike yellow and white. (Post-Impressionist, 1887)
Cypresses
A view of two cypress trees standing alone in a flowery meadow. Their dark green contrasts with the swirling blue sky and pinkish-white clouds. A crescent moon shows high above blue mountains. (Post-Impressionist, 1889)
Harvest at La Crau
A sunny summer day on the plain of La Crau near Arles. Some fields have been mown while others await mowing or are in progress, with men and horses at work. Houses and outbuildings are dotted around, with Montmajour in the background. (Post-Impressionist, 1888)
Vase with Red Poppies and Daisies
Bright red poppies, white daisies, and lavender in a glazed earthenware vase against a green background. (Post-Impressionist, 1890)
The Siesta (after Millet)
A peasant couple in faded blue clothes takes a noonday nap in the shade of a haystack. They have put in a hard morning scything and stacking hay. Their pair of oxen have been unhitched from the hay wagon and are also resting and grazing in the shade of another haystack. Van Gogh painted this from a woodcut by Jean-Francois Millet. (Post-Impressionist, 1890)
Houses at Auvers
A row of houses in a village. In the background are trees against a cloudy sky; in the foreground are shrubs, a wall, and poppies. (Post-Impressionist, 1890)
